History of Bekal Fort
Bekal fort is the largest and best preserved fort in kerala. During the Perumal age, Bekal is the part of Mahodayapuram. The Kodavalam Inscription of Bhaskara Ravi II – the king of Mahodayapuram illustrate the undisputed political sway of Mahodayapuram over this region. Following the political decline of Mahodayapuram Perumals by the 12th century AD, North Kerala including Bekal came under the sovereignty of Kolathunadu.
Battle of Thalikkottai
Importance of this Bekal fort increased under kolathiries and became an important port town of Thulunadu. The Battle of Thalikkottai in 1565 led to the decline of the Vijayanagara empire.
The Nayaks realized the political and economic importance of Thulunadu. Bekal served as a nucleus in establishing the domination of Nayaks in Malabar.
Other Forts In Kasaragod
Hiriya Venkatappa the construct the fort and completed during the period of Sivappa Nayak. The main aim to build this fort is to defend the fort from overseas attack and to strengthen their attack on Malabar. Another famous fort Chandragiri near Kasaragod also constructed during this period. Somashekhara Nayak captured Manjeswar and Thaliparamba and built the New fort at Kanhangad Hosdurga. Some other forts also found in Kasaragod construct on the coastal region and on the route to Madikkeri. Finally Haider Ali defeated the Nayaks and capture the Bekal and control under the Mysore Sultan.
Bekal Fort Under Tipu Sultan
Bekal fort is an important military station of Tipu Sultan When he expend his boundard to capture Malabar. Recently archaeological excavation the coins and other artifacts unearthed at bekal fort which used in Tipu sultan period. After the dead of Tipu Sultan in 1799 the Bekal fort came under the East India Company. During the Company rule Bekal fort became the headquarters of the Bekal Taluk of South Canara District.
