Marayoor is one of the best tourist destination in munnar. Munnar is very famous hills station in kerala. This place is located in Idukki district in Kerala. Munnar is also known as kashmir of kerala. Marayoor is on the way to udumalpet from munnar at 42 km distance. Marayoor has many tourist spots.
The name Marayoor come from the mahabharata epic. Marai mean hide in tamil and yoor means village or places in tamil. The pandavas are hide in this places during the vanavash time. So this name come from that. Also another reasons for this name marayoor may be derived from malaiyoor. Marayoor is surrounded by hills. Malai means hills in tamil. There are near 10,000 people are living in this marayoor village.
When Tippu Sultan defeated the Madurai king in 18th century the madurai people are migrate to this place. Migrated people create a five villages. These villages are called as Anju Nadu such as Kanthalloor, Keezhanthur, Karayur, Marayur and Kottakudi.
We can see the lot of dolmens, stone arts. This dolmens and arts are show us that this places used by people from stone age. Marayoor one of the few place in India where we can see the dolmens and also trekking to the dolmens almost popular tourist activity. Sighting of crocodiles and boars is possible while hiking along the river side.
Marayoor Sandalwood Forest
Marayoor is the only places where we can see the natural sandalwood forest in kerala. Compare to near states tamil nadu and karnataka kerala has only less sandalwood forest. Tourist people can visit the sandalwood factory which is run by kerala forest department.
Places to visit in Marayoor
Tourist people can visit several places near marayoor such as Marayoor dolmens, marayoor Sandalwood forests, Thoovanam waterfalls, Kanthalloor village, Chinnar wildlife sanctuary.
Kanthalloor village is near to the marayoor and very famous place for variety of crops and flowers which we cannot seen in other part of kerala such us Apple, Organge, Plums etc..,
We can reach this village via road transportation. Also nearest highway is NH-49 which passes through Munnar and can be access from Kanthalloor – Marayoor – Munnar.
Thoovanam waterfalls is one of best place near marayoor for tourist who visit to munnar. This waterfalls are formed by pambar river. This river flows inside the chinnar sanctuary. This waterfalls is 10 km distance from marayoor. This is the best place for tourist who like to go for trekking. Tourist can go to trekking with the help of local tour guides.
Trekking time for Thoovanam waterfalls:
7 AM to 10 AM and 3 PM to 6 PM (2-3 hours)
Fee: Rs. 200 per person for Indians & Rs. 300 for Foreigners
Chinnar wildlife sanctuary
Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary is one of the most famous tourist place near marayoor in the distance of 8 km. Therefore boundary for this chinnar wildlife sanctuary are Eravikulam National Park and Indira Gandhi National Park in Tamil Nadu.
Fauna in chinnar wildlife sanctuary
Tourist people can see the lot of animals and birds in this chinnar wildlife sanctuary. We can animals like Indian leopard and spotted deer, Indian elephant, gaur, Bengal tiger, sambar deer, common langur, bonnet macaque, gray langur, Nilgiri tahr etc..,
We can also see the more than 225 bird species include yellow throated bulbul and 52 reptile species include 29 species of snakes, Indian star tortoise and the largest population of mugger crocodiles in Kerala.
More than 14 fish species observe in the Chinnar and Pambar rivers include Garra mullya, river carp baril, giant danio and the endangered hill stream game fish Deccan mahseer.
More than 15 amphibian species and 156 species of butterflies.

More than 963 species of flower plants in the sanctuary and also marayoor sandalwood forest locate in chinnar wildlife sanctuary.
In summer, temperature in marayoor can go up to 30°C.
In Winter, temperature in marayoor can do down to 8°C.
