Marayoor town located in idukki district Kerala near munnar. Marayoor to Munnar distance is 42 kms and it is on the way to udumalpet. In this article we will see the places to visit in marayoor. Marayoor has large sandal wood forest and only places which have sandal wood forest in kerala.
We can also see the rock painting and Ancient dolmens.

Marayoor people migrate from Tamil Nadu when Madurai king defeated by Tippusultan in 18th century. Migrated people create five villages Kanthalloor, Keezhanthur, Karayur, Marayur and Kottakudi also known as Anju nadu (five lands).

Marayoor climate:

In summer, temperature in marayoor can go up to 30°C.
In Winter, temperature in marayoor can do down to 8°C.

Places to visit in marayoor such as Marayoor dolmens, marayoor Sandal wood forests, Thoovanam water falls, Kanthalloor village, Chinnar wild life sanctuary.

Kanthalloor trip:

Kanthallor village near to marayoor and famous for variety of crops which not seen in other parts of Kerala such as Apple, organge, plums etc..,

You can only reach this village via road transportation. Also nearest highway is NH-49 which passes through Munnar and can be access from Kanthalloor – Marayoor – Munnar.

Thoovanam water falls:

Thoovanam water falls major tourist place near marayoor. The falls are formed by pambar river. This river flows inside the chinnar sanctuary. This falls is 10 km distance from marayoor.

If you plan to go for trekking please go with local tour guides.

Trekking time:
Falls (2-3 hours): 7 AM to 10 AM and 3 PM to 6 PM
Fee: Rs. 200 per person for Indians & Rs. 300 for Foreigners

Marayoor dolmens:

Marayoor one of the few place in India where we can see the dolmens and also trekking to the dolmens almost popular tourist activity. Sighting of crocodiles and boars is possible while hiking along the river side.

Chinnar wild life sanctuary:

Chinnar wild life sanctuary most popular tourist place near marayoor in the distance of 8 kms. Therefore boundary are Eravikulam National Park and Indira Gandhi National Park in Tamil Nadu.
Fauna:
Indian leopard and spotted deer, Indian elephant, gaur, Bengal tiger, sambar deer, common langur, bonnet macaque, gray langur, Nilgiri tahr etc..,
More than 225 bird species include yellow throated bulbul.
52 reptile species include 29 species of snakes, Indian star tortoise and the largest population of mugger crocodiles in Kerala.
More than 14 fish species observe in the Chinnar and Pambar rivers include Garra mullya, river carp baril, giant danio and the endangered hill stream game fish Deccan mahseer.
More than 15 amphibian species and 156 species of butter flies.
Flora:
More than 963 species of flower plants in the sanctuary and also marayoor sandal wood forest locate in chinnar wild life sanctuary.
