Berijam lake is one of the famous tourist places in Kodaikanal. Best picnic spot to spend time with your family members. This lake is 21 km away from Kodaikanal town and also you need to get permission from the Forest department to reach this place.

Two wheelers are not allowed to this place. So you can reach this place by four wheelers.
During your trip to this berijam lake, you can see Silent Valley, Fire Watching Tower, Berijam Lake View, Mathikettan Forest View, Cap’s Fly Valley and also highly dense forest.
If you are lucky you can also see animals like Bison, Leopard, Nilgiri langur etc..,. When I travel to this place I see the Nilgiri langur and Bison.
Berijam Lake is an artificially created lake during 1867. The Collector of Madurai, Sir Vere Levigne donated part of his Personal Retirement Funds for building the dam.
They bombed in madras so many british people moved to hill stations. So British built this route to reach Kochi to escape via sea to their country.
This route was used upto 1990 then Tamil Nadu and Kerala Forest Department banned travel in this route. Because there are several animals crossing in this route. So People and animals fight regularly. But Local people used this route.
Trekking people used this route to reach Munnar from Kodaikanal. Animals like Elephants, Bison, Leopard are seen in this route.

How to reach this Berijam Lake
To reach Berijam lake you need to get permission from the Forest department. Either you can get permission directly from the forest department or you can contact the travel agent in Kodaikanal they will get for you.
You need to pay for permission.
- If you get directly from the forest department they will take you to berijam lake using forest department vehicles.
- If you go via travel agent means they will take you using their vehicles.

Berijam Lake Flora and Fauna
The Berijam Lake is rich in flora and fauna. You can spot fauna like bison, leopard around the lake.
The area around lake which is Upper Palani Shola forest reserve consisted of a wide variety of avian creatures such as Crested Serpent Eagles, Pariah Kites, pale-rumped Swallows and the Edible-nest Swiftlets.
Also spot migratory birds like the Common Rosefinch, the Blue Chat, Leaf-warblers and Blyth’s Reed-warbler.

From the road you need to walk some distance. You can see the deep valley, beautiful view of hills, trees and waterfalls from this place. You can also take photos in this place.
Fire Tower is another place you can visit during your trip to berijam lake. This tower is used by the forest department to watch forest fire. From this tower they can watch nearly 30 km. The tourists are allowed to watch from this tower.
Mathikettan Forest View
Mathikettan forest view is one of the must visit places during berijam lake trip. This forest is a highly dense forest.
This forest total surface is nearly 115 hectares. People are not allowed into this forest because people will lose their mind once they visit this forest. This forest name itself shows this.
Mathikettan Solai which means the forest where one loses his mind. Mathikettan forest is preserved as one of the many endangered shola forests in India. There are many endangered animals that live in this forest like Bisons, Nilgiri Langurs, Flying Squirrels, Deers.
In this Mathikettan forest even sunlight does not reach many places. Many people believed that the Sithars (Ancient Medicine Men) lived in this Forest and they did research in Medicine.
The local people believe that a person could lose this mind while entering certain areas in this dense forest where the Sithars lived. No one knows where that area is located in the forest.
There are many herbal items present in this forest. Maybe this is also the reason for the loss of mind. But still it is not scientifically proved and remains to be a mystery. This forest view is awesome to watch.
Berijam Lake View
Berijam lake view point is located near to the fire tower. From this place you can view the beautiful view of Berijam lake and Shola Forest. In this view point you can take beautiful photos. You can spend 15 to 30 mins in this place.
Cap’s Fly Valley
Cap’s fly valley is one of the places you can visit during your visit to Berijam lake. This place is also called as Thoppi Vesum Paarai. From this place you can view the deep green lush valley, waterfalls and mist. In this place tourists throw the cap in the valley. The cap will return back due to heavy winds up there. This is the reason for this name.
This Cap’s fly valley is located 17 km away from Kodaikanal Town. The road towards the view point is slippery and muddy so please walk carefully to avoid injuries.
